Pinterest Video Won't Download: 9 Causes and Fixes
When a Pinterest video refuses to download, the cause is nearly always one of a handful of things, and most of them take under a minute to put right. This checklist runs from the most common cause to the rarest. Work through it in order, and follow the link in each section when you want the fuller explanation.
1. You copied the wrong kind of link
KeepPin needs the address of a single pin, which looks like pinterest.com/pin/1234567890/. Board pages, profile pages, search results and the home feed all have different URLs, and none of them points at one video. If you paste a board link, there is nothing for the parser to fetch.
The fix is to open the pin itself so it fills the screen, then copy its address. On desktop, copy from the address bar. On a phone, tap the share icon and choose the copy option. The Pinterest URL anatomy guide shows what each shape of link means, and the complete guide to saving Pinterest videos walks through the whole copy-and-paste routine from the start.
2. The pin lives on a secret board or a private account
This is the cause people find hardest to accept, because they can see the video perfectly well in their own app. The difference is that they are logged in. KeepPin is not. It visits Pinterest as an anonymous visitor, so anything Pinterest hides from logged-out users is invisible to it. Pinterest's own article on how secret boards work explains that only the board owner and invited collaborators can see those pins.
There is no setting on KeepPin that changes this, and no trick that gets around it. The error you see will say the pin is private or unavailable. If the board is yours, you have options, and the secret board article covers them without pretending a workaround exists for other people's private content.
3. The pin has been deleted
Pins disappear when the uploader removes them, when a board is deleted, or when Pinterest takes the pin down. The Pinterest app sometimes keeps showing a cached preview for a while, which makes it look as if the video is still there. Open the pin in a fresh browser tab where you are not logged in. If Pinterest shows a missing-pin page, the file is gone from the platform, and there is nothing to fetch.
4. The content needs a login to view
Some pins are viewable only when you are signed in, even though they are not on a secret board. Pinterest applies this to certain categories of content and certain regions. Because KeepPin sees the pin exactly as a logged-out visitor would, login-gated pins return the same "cannot be fetched" result as private ones. The quickest test is the same as above: open the pin in a private browsing window and see whether Pinterest asks you to sign in.
5. A pin.it short link did not expand
Links copied from the Pinterest app's share sheet often arrive as pin.it/xxxxxx rather than a full pin address. Since v1.2.0 KeepPin follows these short links to the real pin automatically, so on a normal day you can paste them as they are. Occasionally the redirect fails, most often because the short link points at a board or a profile rather than a pin.
When that happens, open the short link in your browser, wait for it to land on the full pin page, and copy the long address instead. What pin.it links are and how to download from them goes into why the short form exists and why the expanded URL is the one worth keeping.
6. The pin is an image, not a video
Pinterest shows a play icon on videos, but many pins that look like clips are static images, and some short animations are stored as silent MP4 files rather than GIFs. If you paste an image pin into the video downloader, the parser will tell you no video was found. Switch to the image downloader for stills and the GIF downloader for animated pins. The article on saving GIFs and animated pins explains how to tell the formats apart before you paste.
7. Your browser blocked or hid the download
The parse succeeded, you tapped the download button, and nothing visible happened. In most cases the file did download and the browser simply did not announce it, or it opened the video in a player tab instead of saving it.
Check these spots before assuming it failed:
- Safari on iPhone or iPad puts files in the Downloads folder of the Files app, not in Photos. Apple's iPhone user guide describes where Safari downloads land and how to move a video into Photos.
- Android browsers hand the file to the system download manager, which may only show a small notification.
- Desktop browsers may have a pop-up or download prompt that closed before you noticed.
If the video opened in a new tab and started playing instead of saving, that is a separate and fixable problem, covered in video opens in the browser instead of downloading. Device-specific walkthroughs live in the iPhone and iPad guide and the Android guide.
8. The download link expired
Every download link KeepPin generates is signed and valid for five minutes. If you parse a pin, get distracted, and come back later, the button will return an error saying the link has expired and asking you to parse the pin again. The same thing happens if you bookmark a download link or send it to someone else.
The fix is to paste the pin URL once more and download promptly. Nothing is lost, because the pin URL itself does not expire, only the temporary link to the file. The reasoning behind the short window is explained in why KeepPin links last five minutes.
9. Pinterest is slow, or Pinterest changed something
Occasionally the pin is public, the link is right, and the parse still fails or times out. Pinterest has slow moments, and it also changes its page structure from time to time. KeepPin's parser tries several strategies before giving up, but a change on Pinterest's side can still break things for a short period.
Wait a minute and try again. If the same public pin keeps failing, send the URL through the contact page so it can be checked. The article on what to do when Pinterest changes its links explains what stays stable and how fixes roll out.
Quick reference
| Symptom | Likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| "No pin found in this link" | Board, profile or search URL | Open the pin itself and copy its address |
| "This pin is private or unavailable" | Secret board, private account, login-only or deleted | Open in a private window; if Pinterest hides it, it cannot be fetched |
| Short link fails | pin.it pointing at a non-pin page | Expand the link in your browser and copy the full URL |
| "No video in this pin" | Image or animated pin | Use the image or GIF downloader |
| Button does nothing | Browser hid the download | Check Downloads or Files |
| Video plays in a tab | Browser chose to play inline | Use the long-press or right-click save fallback |
| "Link expired" | More than five minutes passed | Parse the pin again |
| Timeout on a public pin | Pinterest slow or changed | Retry, then report via contact |
Most failed downloads are solved by the first two rows. If you have worked through all nine and a public pin still will not come through, the contact page is the right place to report it, and including the pin URL makes the check much faster.
