Anatomy of a Pinterest URL: Pin IDs, Boards and What a Downloader Needs

•6 min read•KeepPin Team

Paste the wrong kind of Pinterest link into a downloader and you get an error that tells you very little. Most of those errors come down to one confusion: the link pointed at a board, a profile or a search page rather than at a pin. This article takes a Pinterest URL apart so you can recognise the one piece a downloader actually reads.

The only part that matters: the pin ID

Every pin has a numeric identifier. It appears in the canonical pin address:

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1234567890123456789/

The long number is the pin ID. Everything a downloader does starts from it: it is the key used to fetch the pin's data, and from that data the media address on the CDN. The ID does not change when the pin is viewed from another country, in another language, in the app or on the web. Two URLs that look completely different can point at the same pin as long as the ID matches.

Pinterest sometimes puts a readable slug in front of the number, something like /pin/kitchen-shelf-ideas--1234567890123456789/. The words are decoration for search engines and humans. The number after the double hyphen is still the ID, and a downloader can ignore the words entirely.

Which Pinterest links are pins and which are not

URL shapeWhat it isWorks in a downloader?
pinterest.com/pin/<id>/a single pinyes
pinterest.de/pin/<id>/ or any country domainthe same pin, regional siteyes
pin.it/AbCdEfshort link to a pinyes, after it is expanded
pinterest.com/<user>/a profileno, it is a person
pinterest.com/<user>/<board>/a boardno, it is a collection
pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=...search resultsno
pinterest.com/ideas/...a topic pageno

A board URL is the most common mistake. A board is a list of pins, sometimes hundreds of them, and it has no single media file of its own. A downloader that receives a board address has nothing to fetch. KeepPin does not offer batch downloads of whole boards; the way to save several pins is to open each one and copy its own address, a workflow described in the guide to downloading Pinterest videos on a Mac or Windows PC.

Profile URLs fail for the same reason. Search pages and topic pages are generated lists with no fixed contents at all.

Tracking parameters and share-sheet clutter

Links copied from inside Pinterest rarely arrive clean. Depending on where you copied them, you may see extra segments after the ID and a question mark followed by tracking tags:

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1234567890123456789/sent/?invite_code=...&sender=...
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1234567890123456789/?utm_source=...

None of this changes which pin the link refers to. The parts after ? are query parameters, used by Pinterest to record how a link was shared and who opened it. The /sent/ segment is added by the share sheet. A downloader strips all of it and keeps the ID.

You can strip it yourself if you prefer a tidy link: delete everything from the first ? onward, and remove any path segment after the ID. What remains is the canonical form. There is no harm in leaving the clutter in place, though, because a parser only ever looks for the number.

pin.it short links

When you tap Share in the Pinterest app and choose Copy link, you usually get a short address on the pin.it domain rather than a full pinterest.com URL. It looks like https://pin.it/2xYzAbC. That is a redirect: open it and Pinterest sends your browser on to the full pin address, ID and all.

Short links have no ID visible inside them, so a tool has to follow the redirect before it can do anything else. KeepPin has done this since version 1.2.0. If you use another method and it rejects the short form, opening the link in a browser and copying the expanded address from the bar solves it. The article on what pin.it links are and how to download from them goes deeper, including why the expanded URL is the one worth keeping in your notes.

Country domains

Pinterest serves the same pin on many national domains: pinterest.co.uk, pinterest.fr, pinterest.jp, pinterest.com.au and others. The page text may appear in a different language, and the domain reflects where the person copying the link was, not where the pin was created. The ID is identical and the media on the CDN is identical.

A parser should accept any of these as long as the path contains /pin/<id>/. KeepPin recognises all regional Pinterest domains, and the guide to Pinterest country domains and downloads covers the details, including what happens when you copy links while travelling.

From pin URL to media file

Once the ID is known, the rest of the process has nothing to do with the URL you pasted. The downloader requests the pin's data from Pinterest as a logged-out visitor, reads the entries that describe the pin's image or video, and picks the address of the largest rendition. Those addresses live on a different domain altogether, pinimg.com, which is Pinterest's content delivery network. The article on where Pinterest actually stores your pins explains why the app and the files are kept apart and what the paths on that domain mean.

This separation is also why a pin's visibility matters more than its URL. If the pin belongs to a secret board or requires a login to view, a logged-out request returns no media data, and the download stops before it begins, regardless of how well-formed the link was.

Finding the pin URL on each platform

The right link is always the one that names a single pin. Where you find it depends on the device.

  • Desktop browser. Click the pin so it opens on its own page, then copy the address bar. It will already be in the /pin/<id>/ form. Alternatively, use the share icon and choose Copy link.
  • iPhone and iPad. Open the pin in the Pinterest app, tap the share icon, then Copy link. Expect a pin.it address. Paste it into Safari and the video downloader will expand it.
  • Android. Open the pin, tap the three-dot menu or the share icon, choose Copy link. As on iOS, you will get a short link.
  • From the web app on a phone. If you browse Pinterest in a mobile browser rather than the app, the address bar shows the full URL, and copying it works the same as on desktop.

Pinterest's own help pages at help.pinterest.com document the share and copy options in each version of the app if the buttons have moved since this was written.

A quick check before you paste

Three things to look for in the link you copied:

  1. Does the path contain /pin/ followed by a long number, or is it a pin.it short link? If yes, it is a pin.
  2. Does the path look like /username/board-name/? If yes, open the pin you want from inside that board and copy again.
  3. Is the pin visible when you open the link in a private browser window? If it asks you to log in, the pin is not publicly readable and no downloader can reach it.

Getting the URL right removes the most common cause of failure. When a correct link still fails, the list of causes and fixes for a Pinterest video that will not download works through the remaining possibilities in order.
