Idea Pins vs Video Pins: How to Save Each Kind

•7 min read•KeepPin Team

Not every video on Pinterest is the same kind of pin. A standard video pin is one clip with a title and a link. An Idea Pin is a small multi-page story that can mix video, images and text, and it behaves differently when you try to save it. Knowing which one you are looking at tells you what to expect from a downloader and why some results come back as a single file while others do not.

What a standard video pin is

A video pin is the simplest case. Someone uploaded one video file, Pinterest transcoded it into a few resolutions, and the pin page plays it. There is one piece of media, one pin ID, and one URL of the form pinterest.com/pin/<number>/.

Saving it is the routine described in the complete guide to saving Pinterest videos: copy the pin link, paste it into the KeepPin video downloader, download the MP4. You get the video at the resolution Pinterest stores, which is commonly 720p and higher only when the upload itself was higher. No watermark is added, because Pinterest does not burn one into the file.

What an Idea Pin is

Idea Pins were introduced as a format for step-by-step content: a recipe, a makeup routine, a DIY build. Instead of one media file, an Idea Pin is made of pages, and each page is its own block of content. A page can be:

  • a video clip, often short and vertical
  • a still image
  • text laid over a background colour or image

The viewer taps or swipes through the pages in order. On the page itself, Pinterest shows a progress bar at the top with one segment per page, which is the quickest way to recognise the format. Pinterest has renamed and reshuffled this feature more than once, and newer pins created in the app may simply be called pins or video pins even when they carry several pages, so the name on the label matters less than the structure underneath.

The important consequence for downloading: there is no single file that is "the Idea Pin". There is a list of pages, and each page that contains video or an image has its own media file on Pinterest's servers.

Why this matters for a downloader

A downloader works from a pin URL. It fetches the pin page as a logged-out visitor, reads the pin's data, and looks for media locations. For a video pin, that means one video. For an Idea Pin, the data contains a list of pages, and a downloader has to decide what to do with a list.

KeepPin's approach is to hand you the media it finds for that pin. When the Idea Pin has a single video page, you receive that video. When it has several pages, what you get depends on how Pinterest exposes the pin: some multi-page pins are published with one primary video that stands for the whole story, and others expose each page separately. There is no batch download, so if you want every page of a longer Idea Pin, expect to work page by page and, in some cases, to find that a page is not reachable as a standalone file at all.

The structure of the pin is what limits what can be fetched, and the same limits apply to any tool that reads the public pin page.

Telling the two apart before you paste

A few cues help:

CueVideo pinIdea Pin
Progress segments at the top of the pinNoYes, one per page
Swiping or tapping advances contentNo, it just playsYes
Text overlays that change between scenesRareCommon
Outbound link to a websiteUsuallyOften absent

If a pin has a segmented bar and swipes, treat it as multi-page.

You can also look at the URL, though it will not tell you the type. Both formats use the same pinterest.com/pin/<id>/ shape, and both are shared from the app as short pin.it links. The anatomy of a Pinterest URL explains what is in that address and why the pin ID is the only part a downloader needs.

Saving a video pin

  1. Open the pin. On desktop, copy the URL from the address bar. In the app, tap Share and then Copy link.
  2. Paste it into the downloader on the KeepPin home page.
  3. Wait for the pin to be parsed; you will see the video and a download button.
  4. Tap Download within five minutes, because the link is signed and expires after that. If it has expired, paste the pin link again.

The file is an MP4 and plays in the default player on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows.

Saving the pages of an Idea Pin

Start the same way: copy the link and paste it. Then look at what comes back.

  • If you receive a video, it is the primary video for that pin. For a one-page Idea Pin, that is everything.
  • If the pin has several video pages and you only received one, try opening the pin in a desktop browser and stepping through the pages. Each page that is a full video will sometimes have its own pin URL when the creator built the story from existing pins; if so, copy that URL and paste it separately.
  • If a page is a still image, it is served from Pinterest's image host, and the image downloader is the right tool for it. Image pages inside Idea Pins are ordinary images and come back at their original resolution.
  • If a page is a short looping clip with no sound, it is treated as an animated pin, and the GIF downloader handles it. The distinction between true GIFs and silent MP4s is explained in saving Pinterest GIFs and animated pins.

Text-only pages have no media file; Pinterest renders them from text and a background, so a screenshot is the only way to keep them.

When it does not work

Multi-page pins are a frequent source of "I got the wrong thing" confusion, so it is worth being explicit about the failure modes.

You got an image but expected a video. The pin's first page is an image, and that is what was exposed as the pin's main media. Step through the pin in the browser to see whether a video page exists and has its own URL.

You got one video but the pin has five. Only one was published as the pin's primary media. The other pages may not be individually fetchable.

Nothing came back at all. The pin may be private, deleted or on a secret board, or the link may not have been a pin link. The ordered checklist in Pinterest video won't download: 9 causes and fixes walks through each cause, starting with the most common.

The video is shorter than what plays on Pinterest. You have one page's clip. Pinterest does not store a stitched version of all pages, so no downloader can offer one.

A note on quality and specs

Idea Pin videos tend to be vertical and short, and Pinterest's guidance on lengths and aspect ratios is in its product specs. That page describes what creators should upload, not what you receive, which is the rendition Pinterest kept. A vertical 1080 by 1920 upload often comes back as a 720-pixel-wide rendition, which is normal for the platform.

Keeping it fair

Idea Pins are closer to creator content than ordinary repins: someone filmed, cut and captioned every page. Saving a copy so you can follow a recipe without a signal is one thing; reposting the pages as your own is another. If you plan to share what you saved, credit the creator and link back to the pin. Pinterest's own help pages describe how creators can report copies, and KeepPin honours valid copyright notices sent to [email protected].
